SUSSEX TECH BOARD OF EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

A summary of discussion and actions from the September 10, 2018, Board of Education meeting.

Board members present: President Warren Reid, members Judy Emory, George Torbert and Marcel Hayes.

Discussion

The Board discussed proposed revisions to multiple board policies, which will return for approval at the October meeting. If you would like to provide input, please email feedback@sussexvt.k12.de.us.

  • Board Policy AC, Nondiscrimination, and administrative regulations to align the District’s nondiscrimination policy with state and federal law.
  • Board Policy ADC, Smoke Free/Tobacco Free Policy, including aligning board policy with current practice and adding vaping and electronic smoking devices to align the policy with Delaware Code.
  • Board Policy BDG, School Attorney, authorizing the Superintendent to retain legal advice and seek counsel as appropriate.
  • Board Policy BEA, Public Board Meetings, consolidating several existing policies into one.
  • Board Policy BIBA, Board Travel, including minor language changes.
  • Board Policy DJB, Purchasing, reflecting discussion at the August 13 Board meeting to require that district purchases greater than $9,995.99 from discretionary funding sources go out for bid and be approved by the Board, and that facility/construction change orders greater than $10,000 also be approved by the Board.
  • Board Policy GBDBG, Board-Staff Communications, consolidating several redundant policies into one.

The Board was briefed on individuals who have been identified as interested in servingon the Citizens’ Advisory Committee, the Teachers’ Advisory Committee, and the Citizen Budget Oversight Committee. President Warren Reid will serve as the Board representative to the selection committee for the Budget Oversight Committee, which must select the members under Delaware Administrative Code.

Action Items

The Board took action on the following items:

  • Approved purchasing textbooks for the Adult Education apprenticeship program, including for carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and welding programs, for a cost of $20,699.19 from Pearson Education, Inc.
  • Approved purchasing textbooks for the High School math program, for a cost of $13,760 from Cengage Learning.
  • Approved purchasing an electronic reference database license for student research in Criminal Justice, Health Professions, and Early Childhood technical areas, for a cost of $13,414 from ProQuest LLC.
  • Approved purchasing drums, cases and carriers for the Sussex Tech Raven Nation Marching Band, for a cost of $13,402.15 from B&B Music. Funds had previously been allocated in December.
  • Approved a purchase order for storm drainage piping repairs, for a cost of $10,904 from Hopkins Construction.
  • Approved a purchase order for boiler maintenance, for a cost of $24,060 from Delval.
  • Did not approve a food services contract with M&P Adventures for the Adult Education program.
  • Approved new board policy BGA, Policy Development, including some minor language changes.
  • Approved new board policy BEDH, Public Participation at Board Meetings, codifying current practice into policy.
  • Approved new board Policy BDF, Advisory Committees to the Board of Educationand administrative regulations, authorizing the establishment of the committees and providing details on the membership.

Other Items

  • At the beginning of the meeting, Board member Ms. Teresa Carey announced she would be resigning from the Board for personal reasons effective immediately.
  • Board member Ms. Judy Emory also informed District staff that she would not be seeking reappointment to the Board when her term expires, and that this would be her final meeting.
  • Board member Mr. George Torbert had previously announced his intention not to seek reappointment to the Board when his term expires on November 3.

The next board meeting is scheduled for October 15, with an executive session at 4 p.m. and a public meeting at 5 p.m.
