SUSSEX TECH BOARD OF EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
A summary of discussion and actions from the March 11, 2019, Board of Education meeting.
Present:President Warren Reid and members Gary Brittingham, Marcel Hayes, Adele Jones, and Robert Masten.
Discussion
The Board discussed proposed revisions to multiple board policies which will return for approval at the April board meeting. If you would like to provide input, please email feedback@sussexvt.k12.de.us.
- Proposed revisions to Board Policy GCID (Staff Development - Athletic Coaching Staff), including language changes and a revised format for policies, and creating associated administrative regulations.
- Proposed revisions to Board Policy GCIDB (Free Tuition - Adult Education), including language changes and a revised format for policies.
- Proposed revisions to Board Policy IGAI (Comprehensive Health Education Program), including aligning language with current state regulations and retitling the policy.
- Proposed revisions to Board Policy IHAIA (Non-District Owned Vocation Projects), including language changes and a revised format for policies, and creating associated administrative regulations.
- Proposed revisions to Board Policy IHD (Adult Education), including language changes and a revised format for policies.
- Proposed revisions to Board Policy IKFB (Graduation Ceremonies), including allowing exceptions to the policy if a student provides the Board with exigent circumstances.
- Creating new Board Policy JR (Disclosure of Student Directory Information), aligning the policy with state and federal law and creating associated administrative regulations.
- Creating new Board Policy KF (Use of Facilities), codifying current practice and creating associated administrative regulations.
- Proposed deletion of Board Policy IHAI (Home Construction), as that program has not existed for some time.
- Proposed 2019-2020 School Calendar options, including a pre-Labor Day start and a post-Labor Day start. (Related: School Calendar Feedback Wanted.)
Action Items
The Board took action on the following items:
- Approved revisions to Board Policy GCC (Personnel Application Procedures), including a name change and creating associated administrative regulations.
- Approved revisions to Board Policy GCCA (Employee Leave),including language from other policies and adding new language for paid parental leave.
- Approved revisions to Board Policy GCF (Criminal Background Check Policy), updating and standardizing language.
- Approved revisions to Board Policy GCIDA (Teacher Travel – State and National Youth Organization), adding DECA as an allowable conference.
- Approved revisions to Board Policy GDD (Vacations and Holidays),including updating titles and language, and revising the language on 12-month employee reporting during inclement weather to reflect current practice.
- Approved revisions to Board Policy GEBD (Staff Conduct / Electronic Communications & Social Media Policy),updating language on social media platforms and devices, improving language clarity and deleting redundant language, and deleting language that allows communication with students for any reason other than specifically job-related duties.
- Approved deletion of Board Policies GCCAA (Medical Verification for Absences), GCCAB (Sick Leave Accumulation), GCCAC (Sick/Vacation Leave Usage During State-Approved Short-Term Disability Leave of Absence), and GCCAD (Maternity Leave), as those topics are already defined and governed by Delaware Code or the Delaware Administrative Code.
- Approved the monthly financial report.
- Approved the recertification of the admissions lotteryas conducted by the Data Service Center.
- Approved the rescinding of the purchase of a truck and to issue an RFP for the purchase of two replacement trucks.
- Approved the hiring of consultant ABHA/BSA+A to conduct a district feasibility study, including a review of grounds and buildings and to offer recommendations for improvement or replacement of facilities.
