June 1, 2020

Dear Sussex Tech seniors and families,

We know this year has presented you with many challenges, and we are very proud at how you have overcome them. For the last few months, our team has been working on ways to recognize and celebrate your accomplishments even while we can’t be together in person, including:

  • Raven Rides: Last week, our staff spread out across Sussex County to deliver caps, gowns, t-shirts, and signs to put in your yards. We had a great time, and we hope you did also.
  • Senior Video: Over the next few weeks, you’ll have a senior video with highlights, photos, and student and faculty speeches that would normally take place at graduation.
  • Social Media Celebrations: Starting June 2 and continuing throughout the summer, we are highlighting seniors and their future plans each day on our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).

The event you’ve all been waiting for is graduation, and we’re happy to be able to announce those details now. The Board of Education wanted to ensure that every student who is able can attend an in-person graduation ceremony, and we have been working on those details for some time.

Due to the Governor’s executive orders, the ceremonies will look a little different this year, but we are pleased to be able to hold a ceremony that allows our seniors to walk across the stage to receive their diplomas and be joined by members of their families.

The Important Details

Please review the details below and let us know if you have any questions. Call 302-856-0961 or email

When will the ceremonies take place?

Graduation ceremonies will be held in four sessions, on June 11 and 12, at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with students grouped by technical area:

5 p.m. June 11: Health Professions; Dental Services; Media Broadcasting

8 p.m. June 11: Digital Publishing & Design; Business, Finance and Marketing; Cisco Networking; Carpentry; Physical Therapy – Athletic Health Care

5 p.m. June 12: Criminal Justice; Early Care and Education; Hospitality; Cosmetology

8 p.m. June 12: Electrical; HVAC-R; Collision Repair; Automotive Technologies; Environmental & Landscaping

Where will the ceremonies be held?

Outdoors in Raven Stadium.

Who will be able to attend?

Each senior will be limited to two guests. The ceremonies will be livestreamed for watching from home.

Why are we holding graduation this way?

Under the current restrictions, we cannot hold events with more than 250 people, so we have to divide our senior class into smaller groups and limit the number of guests. We know that will disappoint some of you, but we cannot safely accommodate larger groups or additional guests.

Our ceremonies will all be livestreamed on our YouTube page, and we encourage anyone in an at-risk group to watch it that way.

How will this all happen?

These details are different from prior events and graduation ceremonies, so please review them very carefully and let us know if you have any questions.

Arrival and Parking

  • Seniors and their families will arrive in a single vehicle no later than 60 minutes before the start of their ceremony – that’s 4 p.m. for the 5 p.m. ceremony and 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. ceremony.
  • Vehicle parking passes will be issued by the high school office prior to the event. Seniors can pick up their passes on June 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the gym/bus entrance. At that time, students can also clear any outstanding debts with the high school office; please bring exact change. Debt amounts can be found in Home Access Center or by calling the high school office. Seniors can also return textbooks and calculators at that time. Seniors can also be escorted to their lockers to clean them out.
  • Arriving earlier does not guarantee better seating; guests will be assigned to seating areas by our staff. There will be no lining up outside the stadium. Students and families must remain in their cars until instructed by a staff member.
  • Two-household families who want to arrive in more than one vehicle can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis by submitting a request to the high school office at 302-856-0961.
  • Specific parking areas will be designated, and staff will direct you to your area.
  • Students scheduled to attend the 8 p.m. ceremony will be allowed to enter the campus and park beginning at 7 p.m. Students and families must remain in their cars until instructed by a staff member.
  • Concessions will not be available; we encourage guests to bring water.

  • Graduates must come fully dressed in their cap and gown. There will be no time or facilities available for appearance adjustments. Dress code details are found on page 30 of the student handbook.
  • Seniors will exit their vehicles first and go to a staging area as directed by staff. Guests will remain in their cars until instructed to go into the stadium.

Guest Seating

  • Guests will be seated in the bleachers at appropriate distances. Only two guests will be allowed per student; guests from the same household will be seated together.
  • No guests will be allowed to stand along the stadium fence, or park along the highway.
  • Any children in attendance must remain with a parent or guardian at all times.

The Ceremony

  • Students will pick up their diploma and technical certificate from a table before they cross the stage.
  • Our photographer will take a photo of each graduate as they cross the stage. Students may remove their cloth face covering for the photograph.
  • We expect the ceremony to take about an hour. There will be no speeches – those will be recorded as part of the senior video – and no cap toss as part of the ceremony.
  • At the end of the ceremony, students will process out of the stadium and guests will head directly to their family vehicles. There will be no congregating or group photo opportunities.

The health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We must follow very strict guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state Department of Education, including:

  • People should not attend if they have a cough, high fever shortness of breath, or have been exposed to anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days.
  • Senior seating will be spaced apart at appropriate distances.
  • Guests will be seated in the bleachers at appropriate distances. Guests from the same household will be seated together.
  • All participants aged 13 and up, including seniors, will be required to wear cloth face coverings. Participants ages 2-13 will be encouraged to wear cloth face coverings.
  • Safety signage will be posted throughout the venue.
  • Hand sanitizer stations will be set up at each entrance and exit to the stadium.
  • Portable restrooms will be available and sanitized every 15 minutes.
  • No access to the school building will be permitted.
  • All surfaces touched by graduates and participants, including seating and railings, will be disinfected between ceremonies.
  • All staff members and facilitators will use hand sanitizer at regular intervals throughout each ceremony.
  • School staff will be present to enforce social distance requirements.
  • There will be no hand-shaking, hugging, high-fiving, or other contact between participants.

What about inclement weather?

In the event of bad weather, the ceremonies will be held on the next Thursday or Friday, June 18 and 19, at the same times. If a decision is made to reschedule, families will be contacted through our call-home system and notices will be posted on our website and social media channels.
