New dining options to roll out this year

Sussex Technical High School is unveiling two new food-service programs this year to offer students more convenient dining options.

  • Two Grab & Go sandwich serving lines will be added during lunch periods in the Commons. Both hot and cold sandwiches will be offered, changing from day to day. These lines should reduce the amount of time students spend waiting in lines and give them more time to enjoy lunch.
  • Breakfast After The Bell will begin September 9 as pilot program offering breakfast items from mobile carts after first period, available in a grab & go bag with an entree item, juice, fruit, and a wet nap. The carts will be located in the Commons and the 200 wing. Teachers may still designate their classrooms as no-food-allowed zones, or may have students eat breakfast in a certain area.

Breakfast After the Bell is in addition to the traditional cafeteria breakfast beginning at 8:05 a.m. It has run successfully for several years in the Delmar School District, said Child Nutrition Supervisor Terri Addlesberger, who said the additional opportunity to eat breakfast can produce significant improvements in students.

Students should have money in their accounts to participate or may charge until they reach their limit; students participating in the free or reduced-price program will get free or reduced pricing for Breakfast After the Bell.

Other items of note:

  • Charge limits for students without pre-paid balances in their accounts are $10 for paid students and $5 for reduced-price meal participants. The MySchoolBucks website and app can help parents set low-balance alerts or monitor how students are spending the money.
  • Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals must reapply for eligibility every year, including those in the program last year. Applications are now available online, and paper copies are available from the high school office or the cafeteria staff.
  • Food allergies and dietary concerns should be first reported to the school nursing team. The food service staff and nurses work together closely to care for our students.

Questions about cafeteria or dining programs should are directed to Child Nutrition Coordinator Terri Addlesberger at 302-853-1593 or by email.
